1-2 year open-rank position on the history of Soviet glaciology in Central Asia
at the Department of Geosciences, Geography Unit, University of Fribourg, Switzerland
This open-rank position is part of a Swiss National Science Foundation grant titled “Timescapes of ice : Soviet glacier science in Central Asia, 1950s-1980s”. The successful candidate will carry out research on the history of Soviet glaciology, with a focus on Kazakhstan, by exploring its background in Imperial Russian sciences, its establishment and institutionalization during the Soviet Union, its scientific and political discourses, and its sites and research practices in Central Asia.
Job description
Archival and library fieldwork in Kazakhstan (archive of the Academy of Science, National archive, oral-history interviews)
Publication of one scientific article in an international peer-reviewed journal
Co-organisation of conference panels and international conference
Support of PI in grant administration
Qualifications
For application on PhD level (2 years) :
A Master’s degree with specialization in historical geography, environmental history, history of science, Russian/Soviet history or other relevant fields
Evidence of publication capacity
Interest and ability to work in a collaborative and interdisciplinary manner
Native speaker or fluent in Russian, very good language skills in English
For application on post-doc level (1 year) :
A completed PhD in historical geography, environmental history, history of science or other relevant fields
Evidence of publication capacity
Interest and ability to work in a collaborative and interdisciplinary manner
Native speaker or fluent in Russian, very good language skills in English
Research experience in former Soviet archives
Conditions of employment
The appointment for the PhD level position is for 12 months, extendible to 2 years. Gross salary is in the range of 47-50K CHF per year (100%). The appointment for the post-doc level position is for 12 months, in the range of 65-70K CHF per year (80%). Both salaries follow the salary scale of the canton of Fribourg.
